Dancers At The End Of...
Original song by Milburn, Thomas & Wishart; rewritten by Erickson, Falcone, Pattison, Wileman & Wishart
This was one of the first vocal tracks I sent Don. The original that I sang with Next Year's Big Thing had a reggae backing and we recorded it on a Tascam 4 track round at Lol (our drummer's) house. Don emailed to say that he could hear the reggae feel in the vocals and wanted to take a different route. That was fine with me. I just loved the tune and the words and was keen to hear what he'd get up to with it. The sax playing on here was taken from 2 tracks that I recorded. I couldn't decide which I liked better so I sent them both. When I say send I don't mean in the post...I mean electronically. We have webspace where we upload the music and Don downloads it. Don DigiDelivers files to me. For quick mixes and for bouncing ideas we email mp3's to each other (but we use WAV files for tracking).
This piece's music parts were also very MIDI-based (like Child Growing), with lots of synths and electronic percussion. From a purely personal performance standpoint, it came together easier than any other piece. Sometimes working with MIDI can be hit or miss. Do you really like the sounds? Are the performance’s nuances being captured by the program? Do the effects maintain or add to what you intended? Basically, is it a struggle to get the ideas in the head to the keys and onto the session timeline? For this one, the results were heavenly.
As were all the musical parts that followed.
