Around 20 years ago I wrote this song with Huw writing guitar and bass parts. I can still remember sitting on a sofa writing the lyrics in a bungalow in Bath staring at an empty wall. Feeling sad and miserable over the break up of a relationship. I can't remember if we ever played this song live or if it got written after the band split up.

It was really great to have Huw come over and play on the song again. He didn't play exactly the same this time round and the song got a revamp with a new section added and new lyrics.

I didn't play sax twenty years ago and not much til recently. I was able to borrow Jack's from across the road and luckily the tune flowed out and I remember being really pleased with the quality of the recording. I did indulge in some harmonies and backing vocals that you can never do live.

One thing I've really enjoyed about recording at home has been the time and the privacy to try all sorts of things out that has meant my voice has had a chance to grow and go in all kinds of directions.

Out of all the pieces, this one felt like I came in the latest. On most pieces, I was the first instrument. On a couple, I was second. But with Huw doing bass and guitar, I was the third non-vocal instrument. With more of the piece in place, there seemed less of a need or desire to attempt to take it away from its sweet spots.

I also approached this one with more of a pop sensibility than any other. It really is a sweet tune, very soulful. So, I went with it in terms of lush strings and bits of organ.

While there’s a tendency for me to sometime work in the land of density - lots of tracks, lots of layers, lots of competing phrases - this piece is a bit of fresh air.
